On the 20th of April 1770, Captain James Cook landed in the Eastern part of Australia and named it New South Wales. The ship he sailed on was called the 'Endeavour'.
On the 29th of April, Captain Cook entered Botany Bay, and when he sailed back to England, he said that the Eastern part of Australia is called 'New South Wales'.

Abel Tasman discovered Tasmania on the 24th of November 1642. He was born in 1603. Abel Tasman died on the October the 10th 1659. This explorer died when he was only 56 years old.
